The Challenge

It was really an honor to be invited to create a modular projection mapped installation at the historic Middle East Downstairs in Boston. The design challenge was simple, but formidable: the ceiling on the stage is 7.5 feet high, and the installation needed to accommodate a five-person band. I set out to create a piece that utilized the 20’ depth of the stage to its full potential, and allowed band members to move about through its multiple pieces. Additionally, the structure in its entirety needed to be a freestanding piece, as there was no way to attach anything to the ceiling.

the concept

The design concept was a series of recursive hexagonal columns, lit from the inside with LEDS, appearing to levitate. The spacing between the front shapes gave just enough room for band members to move through

the upgradE

After debuting on March 16 of 2019, the installation made a trip to club polygon in brooklyn, where it was featured at an aphex Twin afterparty. When we returned to boston on Oct 5th for round three, it was time for an upgrade. the dj table was lowered and moved forward, giving the performer more room, and plastic detailing was added.
